Suffering through a horrific event or accident can really have a terrible effect on a person. Sometimes when a person suffers through an exceptionally shocking event, they develop long-term mental issues that get in the way of living a normal life. Having strong reactions to trauma is normal. If after trauma there is an abnormal function of the normal defense systems, the problem might be post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The victim could re-experience the trauma by having distressing recollections of the trauma. They may take cues from their environments that remind them of the event. This will result in psychological distress brought back by thoughts and memories. Another symptom is persistent avoidance. The person may avoid trauma-related thoughts, items, and activities. The person may also have an increased state of arousal. PTSD victims may suffer through sleep disturbances, outbursts of anger, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and an exaggerated startle response when shocked.
