Illinois No. 2 In The Nation For Dog Bite Injuries

The numbers are in and a major U.S. insurance provider has ranked Illinois number two in the nation for the most dog bite injuries. Illinois was ranked second, only to California, for the number of injury claims filed resulting from dog bites. The numbers were released in recognition of National Dog Bite Prevention Week. According to State Farm Insurance, they received 337 claims for dog bites in 2012 from Illinois residents alone; resulting in payouts of over $9 million.

The sad truth of these injuries is that many of them go unreported. While most Illinois residents take responsibility for their pets, there are still many dog owners who do not take their responsibilities seriously. Dog bites can result in infections, scars, puncture wounds, and even fractured bones. If an animal is not properly trained from an early age it is likely to be dangerous to those around it. Dogs make great pets; if cared for responsibly they can provide years of happiness and companionship for their owners, family members, and friends. However, it is important to take the necessary steps to train your pet and make sure others around the animal are safe.
