The Illinois Department of Transportation has listed the twenty worst intersections based of the number of accidents that occur. Four of those intersections are located in Chicago. Those intersections are:
**Stony Island Ave and South Chicago Ave.
**Western Ave and Peterson Ave.
**Kedzie Ave and Belmont Ave.
**Roosevelt Rd and Canal St.
The Stony Island Ave intersection is the most dangerous due to the multiple approaches, the Skyway and a railroad viaduct causing shits in the lanes. Due to the dangers, The Stony Island Master Plan was developed to increase safety at the intersection. The plan includes making the traffic lights longer for motorists to go through and increase safety for bicyclists and pedestrians.
Since red-light cameras have been installed, accidents have decreased by about 8 percent. The state police are working with the Illinois Department of Transportation in order to decrease the number of accidents on the I-80 westbound ramp and I-55 southbound ramp. A step taken in 2012 is the line to show drivers where to stop for the signal was modified in order to prevent rear end collisions. The dangers of heavy traffic coupled with bad weather puts drivers at high risk of getting into an accident, especially during winter when snow accumulates on the roads. Even if drivers are being vigilant, hazardous road conditions could cause drivers to lose control of the vehicle and cause an accident.
